The Free and Sovereign State of Mexico is one of the 32 federal entities of the Mexican Republic. It is located in the central region of the country. With an area of 22,351 km², it represents 1.1% of the national territory. Its capital is the city of Toluca de Lerdo, and it is divided into 125 municipalities. The name of the State of Mexico originates from Mexico-Tenochtitlan, the former capital of the Mexica people. The word comes from Nahuatl and is composed of the following etymological roots: metztli, “moon”; xictli, “navel”; and co, “place,” meaning “the place of the navel of the moon” or, in other words, “in the center of the moon lake.”
