San Cataldo Italy

The territory of San Cataldo lies in an area of inland hills that stretch from north to centre, between the municipalities of Serradifalco, Mussomeli and Caltanissetta, in the zone that includes the Sicilian Sulphur Plateau, a former mining area. Within the territory there is evidence of human settlements dating back to the 6th century BC, although the present town has more recent origins. The municipality was in fact founded by Prince Nicolò Galletti in 1607, when he obtained permission to build and populate the old hamlet of “Calironi”, located within the Barony of Fiumesalato and dedicated to Saint Catald. Over the years, San Cataldo has undergone various changes from an urban-planning point of view, to the extent that today it appears almost like a new town, where recent buildings predominate and few structures can claim significant historical value. The only major cultural testimonies of the past are a number of fine churches and noble residences.
